Why Parents Shouldn’t Despair
Do you despair the multitude of forces pushing your kids the wrong way? Schoolmates, movies, music, higher education and selfish instincts may drive them away from God’s best plan for them. The Enemy will use anything to wash them away from the love of Christ. Parents can quickly feel defeated. Who can swim against such a current?
If you’ve caught yourself despairing, you need a clearer perspective. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says, “God has set eternity in the human heart.” Do you realize what this means? God has planted a longing for eternity in the hearts of your children! Your children are spiritual beings. Can’t you think of times your children have revealed their spiritual nature?
Yes, waves will crash against your kids. But the entire tide of the universe, set in place by its Creator, calls all people to God. If we could just look beyond our little wave pool, we’d see a mighty current rushing throughout this world. It’s the same current Joseph sensed when, instead of pouting about his victimization or plotting his revenge, he said, “You intended it for harm, but God intended it for good” (Genesis 50). It’s the same current Esther sensed when she risked her life because she believed she’d been born for “such a time as this.”
Yes, crushing waves will beat us down, but they pale in comparison to the mighty current of God’s redemptive, timeless, supernatural, unrelenting work. Your kids will face lots of obstacles, but if God is for them…
